Paul Celan
Wolf's Bean
Wolfsbohne

"Wolf's Bean" is one of several poems excised by Celan from his collection Die Niemandsrose of 1963, but carefully preserved by him. This and other poems unpublished in Celan's lifetime are being made available in Gedichte aus dem Nachlass in Germany, and so this edition of Michael Hamburger's translation is being produced to coincide with the first publication of the poem in German. The poem has not been available hitherto in any published collection of English translations of Celan's poems, and bears all the powerful psychological hallmarks of the readily available work of Celan. This edition includes a special Translator's Note in which Michael Hamburger places the poem in the context of Celan's other work.

This edition consists of 250 numbered copies, plus six copies hors commerce. Half of the edition is for sale by Delos Press in the UK and the other half by Winterhouse Editions in the USA. The book was designed and printed by Sebastian Carter at The Rampant Lions Press in 1997, set in Monotype Helvetica by Speedspools of Edinburgh and printed letterpress on Zerkall mould-made paper. The covers are Cockerel hand-marbled papers.
